Mission to Boquillas
©2006 P. Carroll Voss

Sierra del Carmen mountains rise up out of the desert. (51kb) In some areas, you may feel as though you are on another planet. (28kb) Eons of erosion provided the frame, as well as the soil and nutrients, for this plant. (34kb) In the midst of natural beauty, you find prehistoric art. They call them petroglyphs. If they were modern, they'd be called grafitti. (32kb) Nancy Voss gets a closer look at the petroglyph, still bright and colorful. (25kb)
This artist knew buffalo (or bison). (38kb) Storms move in over the mountains. (53kb) Out there there is adventure. (27kb) For some, there may be more adventure than they want. (39kb) Naught will impede the millipede. (54kb)
All of a sudden it goes all defensive. (42kb) Eventually, things get straightened out. (69kb) Any wonder why P. Carroll Voss loves this place? (60kb) A butterfly stops for some thistle nectar. (25kb) The beauty stretches as far as the eye can see. (38kb)
This is in the middle of the desert. However, it also is near the river. (57kb) Looking out from behind interesting rock formations. (39kb) Wetting a whistle on a thistle. (30kb) Cold-blooded creeper freezes when people approach. (75kb) Here's a close look at the little fellow. (52kb)
Rio Grande River separates U.S.A. and Mexico, where it is known as Rio Bravo del Norte. (42kb) The separation only works on maps. (34kb) This is the Boquillos equivalent of shopping in your SUV. (39kb) down by the riverside. Mike McShane begins to sort things while his wife, Susie, and Nancy Voss wait to see what they can do. (81kb)
Nancy Voss stands by as Mick McShane and Victor sort out the details. (55kb) The boys from Boquillos prepare to return home. (52kb) Here's a makeshift souvenir stand. The only inconvenience in crossing is taking off your shoes and putting them back on. (50kb) A vendor continues to fight the border crackdown. (41kb)
Susie McShane and Nancy Voss find some shade and take a rest. (42kb) Another one of many amazing sights in the Boquillos Canyon. (57kb)
